Adkins was brought up by a single mother in various working-class communities of London. Adkins enjoyed listening to contemporary pop music as a child and learning how to play the clarinet as well as the guitar. She discovered Etta, a mid-century rhythm-and blues performer, during her teens and began to think about a career as an artist. While she honed her talents at a government-funded secondary school for the performing arts an acquaintance began uploading songs Adkins composed and recorded on the social media site Myspace. Her work was quickly discovered by record companies and signed to a deal with XL Recordings in 2006.
